Cultivate a Love of Literature

A streamlined version of Kennedy/Gioia’s acclaimed literary anthology, Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing, Compact, 8th Edition is a book to lead readers beyond the boundaries of self to see the world through the eyes of others. Built on the assumption that great literature can enrich and enlarge the lives it touches, this text was developed with two primary goals: to introduce individuals to the appreciation and experience of literature in its major forms and to develop individuals’ abilities to think critically and communicate effectively about and through writing.

* The 8th Edition introduces sweeping changes to the philosophy and details of MLA works cited entries. Responding to the “increasing mobility of texts,” MLA now encourages writers to focus on the process of crafting the citation, beginning with the same questions for any source. These changes, then, align with current best practices in the teaching of writing which privilege inquiry and critical thinking over rote recall and rule-following.

The 13th edition is a slight but not a significant improvement. I have bought several copies to lend to students still waiting for theirs to arrive. Be sure to get the portable edition, which divides the heavy hard cover book into four paperback books which will save your arm by carrying…

A very good and thorough textbook. This textbook gives deep coverage to the areas of short fiction, drama, and poetry. It contains an astounding amount of information. There are quite a number of full stories, poems, and plays–although I have not counted, I would say that the number could be approaching 1000.

Great for professional teaching library! I was required to have the 5th edition of this book for one of my education classes. I didn’t want to buy it though, so I checked THIS edition out of the library. After reading it I realized I actually did want to buy it, because it has a lot of book lists and recommendations that I thought would be useful for my future teaching library. However, a 6th edition of this book was recently released, so I didn’t want to buy the 5th edition for $80 when I KNEW that soon it would be worth almost…
