Bob Golan was twelve years old when the Nazis invaded his homeland from the west and the Soviets from the east. He and his family fled from Poland to the Ukraine and were later forcibly resettled in Siberia. Golan and his brother finally came to Palestine in the company of the “Tehran Children” -a group of children who were rescued by the Jewish Agency. In Palestine, Golan joined the Haganah Underground and fought in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. Golan’s book is a fresh and engaging story of the experience of Jewish refugees in the Soviet Union and Israel.

A Long Way Home I am a 12 yr old boy, who is an avid reader, especially of people who have done extraordinary things in their lives. I read this book by Mr Golan and was so inspired by him that he has become to me my very first and probably forever role model. I have never looked for “human” role models for various reasons, but Mr. Golan changed all that for me!! What a great man, what a life he has lead. A Long Way Indeed! “A Long Way Home” is a view of history in a time and place few of us can only imagine. It is a historical experience seen through the eyes of a young boy and brilliantly recounted. A story of human courage, resilience and sheer luck. From beginning to end this boy’s saga is on the precipice of recent history. In the tradition of Anne Frank, it is a great read for young or old. A Long Way Home I hope Steven Spielburg gets a copy because this would make a great movie. This is a book you can’t put down.It will be great reading for any Middle School or H.S. Student. Most of our children have no idea what families, children, and in this case two young teenagers went through during the Holocaust. This story is about survival, preseverance, and adventure as told from Bob Golan’s eye’s as a teenager.A must read.
